WHAT OCCURED? According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Madrid will pay Dortmund around €100 million (£86m/$107m) for the 19-year-old. Bellingham is scheduled to come in the Spanish capital in the "coming days" to undergo a medical, marking one of the highest transfer payments in the histories of both clubs.

THE BIGGER PICTURE: Bellingham had become one of Europe's hottest properties as a result of his outstanding World Cup performance for Gareth Southgate's England and another outstanding season for Dortmund, when he earned the Bundesliga Player of the Season award. Prior to pulling out over his outrageous transfer fee, Liverpool had been the early front-runners. Manchester City had also briefly entered the race. The only thing left was for the two clubs to agree on a transfer cost after Bellingham said his farewell to Dortmund and was claimed to have been shopping for a property in Madrid.

Furthermore, it has been generally believed for a while that Bellingham and Madrid had reached a personal agreement. He joins a team that faces intense competition in the midfield, not least from a number of promising young talents, now that a complete agreement between the two clubs has been reached. With players like Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Fede Valverde already on their books, Bellingham virtually completes Real's midfield for the foreseeable future. Plans by President Florentino Perez for the upcoming Galacticos are already well under way.

WHAT WILL MADRID DO NEXT? Bellingham's medical exams with his new employers are soon to be scheduled, as Ornstein points out, as Real once again completes their business early in the summer window. After veteran Karim Benzema formally ended his 14-spell in Spain on Sunday, focus will likely now go to adding offensive reinforcements.
